Short bio: Dr. Ornella Iuorio is an academic, researcher and designer working at the edge between architecture and structures. Ornella received a PhD in Structural Engineering at the University Gabriele D’Annunzio, Italy before going on to work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate. She joined the University of Leeds in September 2015 as Lecturer, teaching in the Architectural Engineering Programme before being promoted to "Associate Professor of Architecture and Structures” in 2019. As a member of the University of Leeds community she has received numerous awards, most recently the ICE Sir John Fowler Award in recognition of her work in developing innovative modular steel housing constructions. In addition to other responsibilities, she has also worked as the Civil Engineering School Champion for Athena Swan, promoting gender equality within higher education. Some of Ornella's recent research group focus has now begun to investigate the use of robot manipulator arms and their application to construction of thin shell structures.
