Talk Abstract:
Loss of mobility due to musculoskeletal and neurological conditions can reduce independence and quality of life, yet many rehabilitation technologies remain clinic‑based and poorly personalised. My research aims to address this gap through the development of portable, affordable, and intelligent wearable technologies to support personalised, home‑based rehabilitation.
My research programme brings together two complementary strands. The first focuses on translational technology development, including wearable sensing systems for measuring knee joint biomechanics and muscle activity; adaptive exoskeletons that provide assist‑as‑needed support informed by individual biomechanics; and user‑centred rehabilitation applications designed to support engagement and adherence. These systems are developed and refined through human participant studies, with a focus on usability, responsiveness, and clinical relevance. The second strand investigates rehabilitation biomechanics through experimental simulation, joint kinematic and kinetic analysis, muscle activation assessment, and biomechanical evaluation of assistive devices, to improve understanding of movement mechanics and joint loading during rehabilitation, and inform the design and application of assistive technologies.
In this talk, I will present early findings from this work, discuss challenges associated with translating biomechanics research into practical assistive technologies, and reflect on potential future research directions toward more personalised and scalable wearable approaches for neurological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation across clinical and community settings.

Dr. Aiqin Liu (CEng, MIMechE) is a Lecturer in Biomechanics in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Leeds and a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council in the UK.

Dr Liu is leading the research on the development of rehabilitation assistive technologies including exoskeleton and wearable sensors, through an end‑user–centred approach to ensure that innovation is accessible, inclusive, and equitable.
